I've been told so many contradicting accounts of how American copyright laws work that I'm getting very annoyed. One person told me that if something was published before 1989 but never submitted for copyright, Then it would be PD. But another person told me that even if something was published in 1965, and was never submitted for copyright, it would still be under copyright.
Who is correct??

I think it's like magic, theology or hockey rules. Nobody will ever really undderstand copyright law; it's just one off the mysteries of the universe.
